The history of Skye could be written through the settlements, inhabited and derelict, that dot the island.

Tucked up on a hillside near the little-known marble quarry and path of what was Skye’s only railway line is the abandoned Cill Chirosd Old Manse in a photographically attractive location, but invisible from the road. The Cuillin are on the left, and the peaks of Bheinn Dearg Bheag and Bheinn Dearg Mhor (the big one) much closer in.

The area is geologically very interesting, with eroded limestone pavement in parts, and the aforementioned marble outcrops which were quarried extensively. It’s also a very nice walk from Broadford or from the Church of Kilchrist just near Loch Cill Chriosd, especially if you go on to the cleared township of Boreraig.

For this shot, I positioned a lichen encrusted limestone outcrop in the foreground to mirror the snowcapped mountains beyond, and lit the inside of the cottage using remote radio-controlled flashes. Moonlight filled in the rest.
