MAGGIE ZERAFA

Maggie is a ceramic artist. She served her apprenticeship in Japan under Mashiko artist Ryo Suzuki before making her way to Skye in 1997 via France then London.

In the first picture, she is checking the progress of the 2nd “high firing” of a new batch of work, glazing at an incredible 1270 celcius in her electric kiln. This firing takes 15-16 hours, and uses zinc-based glazes that crystallise into incredible patterns, unique for every piece.

13 years after opening her studio near Armadale Pier, Maggie now feels she and the clay are finally working together. With the complex technicalilties of crystalline glazes mastered, Maggie has found her voice, and her work is spectacular.
