SKYE WEAVERS

Skye Weavers are based in Glendale in the north end of Skye.

Andrea and Roger moved to Glendale permanently in 2012 and set up their weaving and sewing business in the old family croft house. Various outbuildings have since been deployed to contain an expanding and successful business. They are so busy right now that their work day stretches well into the night to keep up with demand.

My wife and I have visited them several times and it’s always been a lovely experience. We are now proud owners of many of their blankets which are gorgeous as well as soft and warm to wrap yourself in on a Sunday afternoon on the sofa. It’s well worth a trip up the windy lane to see them.

They use a pedal-powered loom, which is a first for me. I’ve never seen anything like it. Being mechanically minded I found the whole thing fascinating. And what a good idea to combine some physical exercise with creating gorgeous fabrics.

They also have a huge warping wheel, which does some magic with lots of threads prior to the weaving process itself. They made the warping wheel from some old farm machinery including wheels from a large grass rake and a load of old floorboards. Like I said, fascinating!

I’ll include some more images and details on the photography techniques I used in the blog.
