THE PINK CAVE

Beautiful pink pre-dawn light reflects off the wet boulders and walls in this dramatic sea cave on the coast of the Isle of Skye.

Due to the difficulties of access, and the very real dangers of being trapped and drowning or falling to my death, this shoot took a lot of planning. The tide had to be receding to a suitable level to allow access prior to dawn, with sunrise coinciding with the ebbing tide, and sky with some clouds, but not too many.

It was also technically complex, with focus bracketing and exposure bracketing required in order to get everything sharp and correctly exposed, blending multiple frames together back on the computer once I got home (after an excellent breakfast at Cafe Arriba in Portree).

Everything came together and made for a highly memorable couple of hours carefully picking my way across the cave to find compositions in the darkness. A visit from an otter capped off a gorgeous morning.

No, I won’t tell you where it is.

Get a feel for what it was like in the cave as I go in by torchlight before dawn.
