About Skye At Night

I am Andy Tobin. After many years climbing the professional photography ladder, in 2017 I decided to focus on what I enjoy best - landscape photography.

The seemingly glamorous allure of photographing World Cup football, international rugby, and the UK Premier League for the newspapers had faded. I knew time was up when I said to my wife “Ugh, Wembley again”.

It’s rare that a loved activity translates effectively into a paying job. The pressures change. The enjoyment is sapped out of it. The creativity wanes.

Eager to get back the sheer pleasure of being outside, and creating images from seemingly nothing, I put my money where my brain was and bought a do-er upper house on the Isle of Skye. I’ve photographed for work and pleasure worldwide, but nothing beats the north west of Scotland and Skye in particular.

In 2019 I brought together many different ideas that had been whirling in my mind, and decided to focus on photographing the people and places on the Isle of Skye between sunset and sunrise, and creating a book from the resulting pictures and stories. This is partly a logical decision, because the days are short in the winter which is my favourite time to be out. And partly a creative decision. There are so many photographs of Skye already out there that I wanted to create something new, unseen and innovative.

I have decided to donate all the profits from sales of the Skye At Night book to the Skye Mountain Rescue Team who do such amazing work here on the island. Every copy purchased benefits them directly.

And that’s why you’re seeing this now. Thanks for reading.
