Dunscaith Castle is one of the lesser-known but truly spectacular ruins on the Isle of Skye. It’s located near Tokavaig in the south of the island, about a mile from the road. It’s key feature is the arched defensive bridge that you can see in this photograph.

Taken in January with a half-moon to the left illuminating the rocks and an incoming tide, it looks every bit as atmospheric as it felt on the night.

Legend has it that this is where Scáthach the Shadow, trained the hero Cú Chulainn in the arts of combat (thanks Wikipedia!)
