One of the beauties of Scotland is the ability to camp on just about any unenclosed land.

Known as “wild camping”, a strict code of behaviour applies. Campers should leave no trace, no litter, no evidence of their tent, and stay well away from farm animals, roads and buildings.

Taking advantage of this freedom to camp was French couple Chloe (below, with her octopus mascot) and her partner Antontin. They decided to spend the night on the bealach ("saddle”) above the Old Man of Storr next to the Photographer’s Knoll. There’s a tiny patch of just about level ground that can take a tent.

Thankfully the usual howling wind that seems like a permanent fixture up there had taken the night off. Brave or mad, you decide, but they did get to see an astounding sunrise, so it was well worth it.
