Ashaig Cemetery is near to Broadford, Skye’s second largest town. It has a beautiful outlook, sloping down to the sea, with golden beaches revealed at low tide.

In the centre of the old part of the cemetery stands a gnarled dead tree (a birch possibly?) which makes for a very arresting subject. The tree feels like a metaphor for the lives of those who now rest in the cemetery, having strived against hardship to grow and mature before succumbing to the inevitable.

I have made several visits to this spot (see the video below) and finally got it with a strong aurora showing through the scudding clouds.
